AUTO Lab

Recent developments in the vehicle industry such as autonomous driving capabilities and clean alternative energy methods are revolutionizing transportation as we know it. Alongside, the field of data has greatly evolved in recent years. The collection of vast and rich data is now enabled through novel data sources such as automated fare collection systems, smartphone applications, automated passenger counters and automated vehicle location systems. The combination of these advances gives rise to the development and implementation of modern transportation services tailored to the needs of both the users and the operators. The implementation of such services has strong economic and environmental implications such as the reduction of private vehicle ownership, reduction of city congestion, reduction of air pollution etc.

About the AUTO Laboratory

The Analytics for Urban Transportation & Operations Laboratory (AUTO Lab), is a new laboratory in the Industrial Engineering Department at Tel-Aviv University, headed by Dr. Mor Kaspi. The main research focus of the laboratory is on the development of operations research models and methods for the planning and operation of advanced transportation systems. Research is application oriented, one of its main goals is to develop decision aid tools that will improve decision making at various planning stages. Namely, strategic planning (e.g., network design), tactical planning (e.g., fleet sizing) and operational planning (e.g., scheduling). Strong emphasis is put on the development of collaborations with practitioners in order to base the analysis on real world data and in order to test and implement research outputs in the field. Examples of urban transportation applications at focus include mass transport systems, semi-flexible transportation, vehicle-sharing systems, ridesharing systems and on-demand transportation.
