Nonlinear photonic crystals are quadratic nonlinearity (χ(2)) microstructures that are capable of synchronizing phases of co-propagating optical waves at different frequencies such that they can efficiently exchange energy.

They are extensively used for optics research and applications that require various manipulations of the frequency of light. Thanks to the very recent invention of 3D χ(2)-nonlinearity engineering techniques using femtosecond laser pulses, the studies of intense light interaction with 3D nonlinear photonic crystals become experimentally feasible.

In this seminar, I will present the latest research advances on 3D nonlinear photonic crystals, focusing on the fabrications, characterizations, and applications in frequency conversion, nonlinear wavefront shaping, and nonlinear volume holography.

I will also address the current technical difficulties restricting the femtosecond laser fabrications of 3D nonlinear photonic crystals and present an outlook to future development of nonlinear wave interaction and control in 3D configuration.
