Welcome from the Dean

Prof. Noam Eliaz

Hi all,

I am proud and excited to serve as the 11th Dean of the largest and leading Faculty of Engineering in Israel.

Our main objectives are first and foremost to train you. You are the next generation of engineers to lead the industry and academia both in Israel and around the world.

Over the years we have built a reputation for outstanding teaching and research which are highly interdisciplinary in nature and enhanced by far-reaching partnerships with industry and governmental organizations.

Our students – who participate in unique projects such building autonomous boats, race cars, pollinating drones and portable incubators for remote water sampling – are the ones to become the premier scientists and key members of the leading industries worldwide.

Today, the Faculty consists of five academic units: the School of Electrical Engineering, the School of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Industrial Engineering, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and the Department of Materials Science Engineering. These units encompass all areas of engineering.

Our Faculty is made up of 4700 students and growing, more than 1300 of whom are in our MSc or PhD programs

Unique programs for the inquisitive mind

The Faculty offers a variety of programs toward Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees, and is considered a pioneer in some of these programs.

We have established several interdisciplinary programs, including (1) Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; (2) Electrical Engineering and Physics (an integrated degree program); (3) Digital Sciences for Hi-Tech (3-year double major track, or 3 semesters for those holding a bachelor's degree) with focus on computer software and information systems; (4) Mechanical Engineering with Biomechanics; (5) Biomedical Engineering and Biology with emphasis on Neuroscience (a double degree program in engineering, life sciences, and Sagol School of Neuroscience); (6) Materials Science and Engineering and Chemistry (a double degree program); (7) Engineering with Humanities – adding to the engineering program a cluster of courses in humanities for creative students. Humanistic knowledge enables the engineer to break through cognitive boundaries, develop new perspectives, and lead technological developments by entrepreneurship, such as social media, the wisdom of crowds, and the place of the Cloud in the Smart World.

The Excellence Program within the bachelor's degree provides outstanding students with opportunities for further learning and research during their undergraduate studies, encouraging them to continue to graduate degrees in the Faculty. Students in this program receive a scholarship that covers half of their tuition during the first three years of their studies.

In the master's degree, we are proud to be the first in Israel to offer the opportunity of “Master-Track” studies for those holding a bachelor's degree. The program is based on a cluster of Master's degree courses on a particular subject. Master-Track studies allow university graduates to update and renew their knowledge (Lifelong learning) while working full time. For the moment, we are offering Master-Tracks in artificial intelligence, visual and signal processing, data science, and robotics and electromechanics. Two additional programs are offered in environmental engineering (including water treatment) and systems engineering.

Our university graduates reach global achievements

There is a good reason for our motto "Loving the Problem is the Greatest Way to Invent". Our graduates are being sought after by all industries, and are successfully integrated in various positions in the private sector, security forces, research institutes, and in the academic world.

There is a good reason why Tel Aviv University graduates founded to this day one fourth of all startups in Israel – a significant achievement compared to other academic institutions in Israel. Our graduates also score highly internationally: Tel Aviv University is ranked eighth in the world (and first outside the US) by PitchBook, a prestigious ranking of entrepreneurship, and ninth in the world for producing the most entrepreneurs (who raised over $50,000,000 for startups) that are university graduates. The Faculty of Engineering made a great contribution to these impressive achievements.

The Tel Aviv University Engineering Alumni Organization works in partnership with Faculty management and offers our graduates opportunities for networking, a variety of activities, events, professional development, and assistance in career building.

Leading the most innovative research

Our faculty is home to over 120 internationally acclaimed scientists and engineers who are leading research teams in a variety of areas, such as: cyber, artificial intelligence, smart transportation, data science, communication, optics, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, and in applications for air quality, health, traffic and smart cities, renewable energy, water treatment, nanoscience and nanotechnology, neural machine technologies, micro-mechanics and microflow, development of smart materials, 3D printing, development of technologies for Israel security forces (identifying terror tunnels, defending aircrafts against missile attacks, sheltering of drones) and more.

You are welcome to visit our advanced research labs to learn more about the innovative research done at the Faculty of Engineering.

Industrial Affiliation Program (IAP)

We take care of our university graduates. The Industrial Affiliation Program is responsible for collaborating with many companies from all sectors of industry in Israel and worldwide so that our graduates obtain the most influential key positions.

The program, which is co-managed today with the School of Computer Science, is responsible for scholarships and awards of excellence, for developing joint curricula, joint research, giving training courses sponsored by the companies, supporting teaching labs and research labs, and more.

What does future hold for us?

In continuation of our growth over the previous years, I predict that the faculty will keep striving for new goals. These include developing meaningful collaborations locally and internationally with industry groups, governmental bodies, non-profit organizations, philanthropists, and venture capital funds, to achieve a significant breakthrough for the advancement of science, technology, society, and the economy. We evolve our research and teaching strategies to adapt to a changing world by enhancing social involvement, diversity, and emphasizing the study of engineering as a means of mobility and social empowerment, connecting the industry to the faculty's vision and strengthening synergic cooperation with the industry and security forces. These ideals operate by extending internationality and creating a pleasant atmosphere among academic staff, administrative staff, and students.

I invite everyone who wishes to be part of the technological and environmental revolution that has already begun, to join us in this exciting journey. My door is always open for you. My best wishes for the coming school year. May it be challenging and enjoyable.

Yours truly,

Noam Eliaz, Dean
